The UK Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use (UKMEC) produced by the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FRSH) provides guidance on the safety of contraceptive methods and was updated in April 2016.
The UKMEC is evidence-based for safety but does not advise on the best contraceptive choice for a woman. Furthermore the UKMEC does not give information on the efficacy of contraception. The UKMEC provides advice on the following contraceptive methods: intrauterine contraception, progestogen-only contraception, combined hormonal contraception and emergency contraception.
The UKMEC now includes ulipristal acetate as an emergency contraceptive.1
