University College Hospital will open the first specialist clinic for child victims of FGM this month.

University College Hospital will open the first specialist clinic for child victims of FGM this month.

The clinic will give medical treatment and psychological help to girls aged from 0 to 18 who are at risk in the UK or overseas.

The clinic will be jointly run by consultant community paediatrician Dr Deborah Hodes and consultant gynaecologist Sarah Creighton.

Dr Hodes, said: 'We're determined to work closely with our partners in the local community, social care and the police to help end FGM. We can't put back what's been done, but we can improve girls' lives and prevent FGM happening to others by spreading greater awareness of it.'

The clinic will offer care for affected children and young people and provide documentation and evidence available for use in prosecutions.

In cases where FGM is confirmed, other children within the family will also be assessed. The clinic will refer to counsellors and will ensure that where required surgery is carried out in an age appropriate setting.
