Social enterprise takes over school nursing contract

A social enterprise will be running the school nursing services in Tower Hamlets CCG from May.

A social enterprise will be running the school nursing services in Tower Hamlets from May.

Compass Wellbeing already provides psychological therapies across all the GP practices in Tower Hamlets.

They will take on the contracts of the school nurses previously employed by Barts Health NHS Trust and develop them further. They intend to build on the strengths of the existing school nursing service and help them integrate physical and mental health in the way they deliver services.

Lucy Marks, chief executive of Compass Wellbeing, said: 'The value of school nurses is often hidden. We see them as the lynchpin of school health. We will support school nurses to play a larger part in improving the mental health of the school children as school nurses can raise emotional wellbeing in the conversations they have.'

'Compass has good links with GPs, Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and other psychological therapies for parents so the school nurses don't need to feel like they are operating on their own,' she added.

Sir Sam Everington, Chair of NHS Tower Hamlets CCG and GP, said: 'From my perspective as a commissioner, I'm keen to develop the role in schools around health in children.'

Sir Sam pointed to the higher levels of vitamin D deficiency, obesity and delayed cognitive development in the children of Tower Hamlets. 'I hope that this service will target those children more effectively than visits to the GP practice can,' he said.

Compass Wellbeing, already provides psychological therapies to general practices and the community in Tower Hamlets.
