Consistently smoking just one cigarette daily increases the risk of death compared to people who never smoke, a new study from the USA has found. The findings underscore that there is no safe level of tobacco smoking.
Researchers asked 290,215 people (57.9% men) aged 59 to 82 (mean 71) years about their history of cigarette smoking. Most of those who smoked less than one or one to 10 cigarettes a day at baseline previously smoked substantially more. However, 9.1% consistently smoked less than one cigarette a day since starting the habit, while 22.5% consistently smoked between one and
10 cigarettes a day.
