The microbiome of the human gut has become strongly associated with health and illness, extensive research is exposing the ability of the microbiota to affect human health. Whilst some clinical areas already utilise the microbiota for a specific health outcome, for example as a treatment for C.difficile infection, new areas and treatments are being explored. The promotion of healthy gut microbiota in terms of prevention of illness should not be ignored. Nurses can make themselves familiar with the concept of the gut microbiome, terminology and how promotion of a healthy diet and environment with current public health advice, can play its role in helping the gut microbiome benefit our health.
