Patients received either a 20-week dietary plan used alongside physical exercise or information at baseline about the benefits of losing weight to psoriasis. Significantly more patients achieved the target of at least a 5% weight reduction with dietary intervention (29.8%) than with information only (14.5%).
After 20 weeks, the median reduction in psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) was 48% in the intervention arm and 25.5% with information only.
Furthermore, 49.7% and 34.2% in the intervention and information groups, respectively, achieved PASI50 (50% improvement in psoriasis severity).
The study underscores 'the importance of weight loss as part of a holistic multimodal treatment approach to effectively treat both the skin condition and its associated comorbid conditions in overweight patients with psoriasis'.Further studies will need to assess the long-term impact of dietary intervention on psoriasis.
