What does the future hold for COVID-19 boosters?

Immunisation
Catherine Heffernan outlines the state of the UK’s booster programme, and what nurses could see in 2023

At the time of writing, my local mass vaccination centre is closing down. It’s part of a wider ‘winding down’ of the COVID pandemic vaccination programme. There are discussions around transferring staff from these centres to support GP practices in their delivery of immunisation programmes and parallel conversations about whether delivery of COVID boosters will drop to an annual event or continue as is with Spring and Winter boosters. In the UK, any future decisions are dependent upon the advice from the Joint Committee of Vaccinations and Immunisations (JCVI) and they are consistently monitoring the effectiveness of the vaccine as well as the duration of immunity in the population.
