December 2019 saw the outbreak of a new viral infection in Wuhan, a city in Habei Province of China. The gravity of this disease was soon evident from its potential to cause serious lung disease leading to fatalities.1 The virus was identified as belonging to the coronavirus family and the disease was named COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019). In a short period of time, this disease has spread to cause a global pandemic.
This article reviews the nature of the COVID-19 virus and the risk it poses in diabetes. Avoidance of COVID-19 infection, presenting symptoms and management in relation to individuals with diabetes are discussed.
