More than three quarters of asthmatics are unaware they may be at risk of a fatal attack, research from charity Allergy UK found, despite them believing their condition is under control.

Four million people were treated with asthma medication in 2012-13, according to government data. After surveying 464 participants and using this data, Allergy UK estimated that up to 2.7 million people who considered their asthma to be mild or moderate, were at risk of life-threatening asthma attacks.

It was also found that 49 per cent who class their asthma as 'mild or moderate' have been prescribed oral steroids in the past 12 months. Using oral steroids means the condition is not under control, as the medication should only be given in an emergency, or in the most severe asthma cases.
