Patients taking blood pressure drugs with painkillers are at increased risk of developing kidney problems, a study published online by the BMJ, has suggested.
Researchers from the Jewish General Hospital and McGill University, Montreal assessed combinations of drugs to lower blood pressure and NSAIDs. These are prescribed to elderly people with long-term conditions.
The results showed taking a combination of a diuretic with an ACE inhibitor or an ARB with an NSAID was associated with a 31 per cent higher rate of kidney injury, elevated in the first 30 days of treatment when it was 82 per cent higher.
