Providers of cosmetic surgery should present a record of implants and cosmetic operations to patients undergoing procedures and to their GP, an independent review into cosmetic interventions has recommended.
The review, commissioned by the DH following the PIP breast implant scandal, chaired by NHS medical director Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, called for the cosmetic sector to be better regulated, for practitioners to be better trained and for patients having proper redress if things go wrong.
Key recommendations include the establishment of a registry for breast implants and other devices and making all dermal fillers prescription-only. An ombudsman should also be set up to oversee all private healthcare.
