A collaborative initiative to improve cancer care in the UK has been launched.

The Cancer Nursing Partnership is a joint project by 12 healthcare organisations, including the RCN's practice nursing forum. The focus of the initiative is to the support the effective delivery of the Recovery Package, a series of key interventions which, when delivered together, can greatly improve outcomes for people living with cancer.

The Recovery Package is designed to reduce unnecessary hospital attendance, and support cancer patients. It consists of several different stages, beginning with a holistic assessment of the patient's needs and the creation of a personalised health plan. After this, a clear summary of what treatment has been given and what should happen next is created, to give the patient the ability to self-manage. The package also emphasises the need for a review of the patient's condition six months after treatment has begun.

Rose Gallagher, the RCN's lead for cancer care, said: 'Nursing staff have a big part to play in the roll out of the Recovery Package and in increasing patient's access to person-centred care. The Cancer Nursing Partnership aims to reach over 22,000 nurses with roles in cancer care provision.'
