DH urges frontline staff to have flu vaccination

NHS organisations throughout England are set to receive support from NHS Employers' flu fighter campaign, which aims to increase the number of frontline staff receiving flu vaccinations - protecting staff, their families and patients.

NHS organisations should have started to receive delivery of flu vaccines and you will start to see flu fighter posters and flu clinics in workplaces, including GP practices.

Flu vaccinations are being made readily accessible to staff at a range of times and locations to suit staff, including night workers and those operating in the community. The vaccinations are not compulsory but will be given to staff that request them. Dean Royles, director of NHS Employers, said: 'We want this campaign to make a difference to staff and patients. We are delighted that our efforts last year helped increase NHS staff vaccinations by almost a third.

'This year we're adding additional support for some key staff groups. We are hopeful there will be another significant boost to this year's uptake. Every one of these jabs could save a patient's life.'

According Health Protection Agency figures, 254 people in the UK died of flu between September 2011 and January 2012.
