A league table for England showing 'shocking' local variation in early death rates must drive action to improve public health, health secretary Jeremy Hunt has urged.
Public Health England's Longer Lives website shows people in the north of England have a higher risk of early death than those in the south, with socio-economic background playing a large part in life expectancy. But 'profound' differences between similar areas show councils can learn from each other.
In April, councils became responsible for public health, encouraging people to stop smoking, drink less alcohol and eat healthily.
