Ensuring diabetes patients receive the nine DH-recommended health checks each year should be mandatory, according to the chair of a government spending watchdog.
Margaret Hodge, chair of the Public Accounts Committee, told a hearing into diabetes healthcare in England making basic levels of care compulsory for local commissioners was the only way to improve care.
'If you do not mandate around this you won't get the action on the ground,' she said.
Last week's NHS National Diabetes Audit found the proportion of patients in England receiving all nine recommended heath checks, has increased slightly from 51 per cent in 2009/10 to 54 per cent in 2010/11.
