The NMC will re-elect its council next year, to 'allow it to focus on strategic leadership and decision making and to hold the NMC's executive to account'.
Following the NMC's admission that it has 'substantial failings'; including a backlog of malpractice hearings against nurses, it opted to appoint a new council as it moves to address key issues with the help of a £20 million government grant.
Legislation will be required to reduce the council's size from 14 to 12 members. If it is passed, the change will come into force on 1 May 2013. The terms of office of all members of council, apart from the newly-appointed chair Mark Addison, will end the preceding day.
