Director of nursing at PHE and DH Viv Bennett has urged nurses, midwives and health visitors to test PHE's new public health framework. It was unveiled at PHE's conference on personalised care and population health in Birmingham on 1 July.
The framework is aimed at all professionals with a role in maintaining and improving the population's health: frontline practitioners, professional leaders and managers, commissioners, educators, researchers and national professional leaders.
The framework will bring together the range of information available on public health, so that practitioners can access it more easily. It is focused around six key areas: wider determinants of health; health improvement; health protection; healthcare and public health; health; wellbeing and independence; and lifecourse.
PHE has developed the framework based on four domains that delegates at the 2013 conference asked them to work on.
The framework underpins PHE's national programme to maximise the impact practitioners have on improving the population's health, and aims to shape and support 'health promoting practice', said Ms Bennett.
'This is a menu, not a manual,' she said. 'We hope the framework will help you all create a culture of health.'
The framework is at a first-release stage and will continue to be developed based on work by PHE and feedback from practitioners.
