Just one in five people with diabetes in England and Wales are meeting the targets for keeping their condition under control, according to charity Diabetes UK.
For people with type 1 diabetes in England, the figure is just over one in ten (11.4 per cent).
The charity warns these figures indicate the UK is facing a public health disaster, as the number of people with diabetes increases. It has called on ministers to hold poor performing areas to account and to ensure the delivery of structured education and care planning to enable patients to better manage their condition.
