Nursing featured heavily on this summer’s birthday honours list as the Queen’s Nursing Institute’s (QNI) chief executive Crystal Oldman celebrated her CBE.
Dr Oldman joined the QNI in November 2012. She began her career working in the NHS for 18 years, mostly in community nursing, working with some of the most deprived communities in west London.
She supported learning, teaching and research to support best practice in 1994 joining Buckinghamshire New University as a senior lecturer, to develop a variety of community nursing programmes.
Receiving the honour, she said: ‘‘I am thrilled to have been recognised for my services to community nursing and my leadership of the QNI. We celebrate our 130th anniversary this year and I am privileged to work with a talented team of staff and trustees who are totally committed to high quality care for communities, patients, families and carers at every stage of peoples' lives.
‘We remain dedicated to supporting excellent nursing care in the community, wherever and whenever it is needed, delivered by the right nurse with the right skills.
‘Queen’s nurses, who support the work of the QNI, are shining examples of practitioners who represent the golden thread of the highest standards of patient-centred care in the community which Florence Nightingale was instrumental in establishing.’
A further 16 people were named for various honours in June’s list for their services to nursing, including Jean White – chief nursing office for the Welsh government – who was also awarded with a CBE.
Other honourees included Lee Hough – advanced nursing practitioner at the White Rose Surgery in West Yorkshire –, Denise Llewellyn – executive nurse director at the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board in Wales –, and DR Cherith Semple – a Macmillan head and neck clinical nurse specialist in the South Eastern Trust.
