Dr Peter Carter, former chief executive of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), and Dr Crystal Oldman, chief executive of the Queen’s Nursing Institute, have been named as fellows of the RCN in the organisation’s annual awards.

Other recipients include nurse historian Professor Claire Chatterton, a dual-qualified adult and mental health nurse, who chaired the RCN’s History of Nursing Forum for eight years; Anthony Clarkson, Director and Chief Nurse of Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant; and Dr Matthew Grundy-Bowers, a consultant nurse in HIV and sexual health at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

“I’m delighted to celebrate the achievements of our outstanding RCN Awards winners. They are a credit to the College and great ambassadors for nursing,’ said RCN President Professor Anne-Marie Rafferty.

Others include Professor Sonja McIlfatrick, head of Ulster University’s school of nursing and a leading clinician and academic in the field of palliative care; Dr Ann McMahon, an honorary professor at University of Plymouth and honorary research fellow at University of Glasgow, who was the RCN’s Professional Lead for Research and Innovation for 25 years; Dr Wendy Norton, a senior lecturer at the Leicester School of Nursing and Midwifery who was a member of the RCN Women’s Health Forum Steering Committee for eight years; Dr Crystal Oldman CBE, Chief Executive of the Queen’s Nursing Institute.

‘In the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, it is fitting that they reflect the breadth and depth of expertise within nursing,’ added Professor Rafferty.

‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank, congratulate and applaud them all.”
