Why did you become a nurse?
It was always my ambition but I did not have the opportunity or encouragement when I was younger. I started training on my fortieth birthday as a gift to myself.
How has your career developed since you started nursing?
I always wanted to work in the community, with people living at home. I did this in the UK until I retired in 2008. I loved my work and was proud to be part of a caring, efficient team.
What does your current role entail?
Implementation of the Uganda's Strategic Health Plan stresses the importance of Village Health Teams (VHTs), comprising ordinary village people who work as volunteers. They concentrate on prevention of malaria, TB, HIV/AIDS and diarrhoeal diseases and encourage their communities to take up antenatal and immunisation programmes.
