What made you go into nursing?
I come from a really long line of nurses, so I’ve just followed in their footsteps. My mum and both my aunties on that side were nurses, so I had a strong nurse influence when I was young. When it used to be school photograph time, I used to have my mum’s fob watch and used to wear it for pictures.

How would you describe the beginning of your career?
I started in 1999, so I’ve been qualified for 25 years now. When I first started, it was so daunting as a new nurse on the wards. I worked as a staff nurse on a medical and surgical assessment unit, which was incredibly fast paced. It was a real baptism of fire. Basically, it was learning on your feet. It was once you got your pin and your set – it was learning on the spot to be able to nurse effectively.
