Why did you become a nurse?
My parents told me that I said I was going to be a nurse when I was three years old. I did not change my mind or consider any other profession.
How has your career developed since you started nursing?
I could not have predicted that my nursing career would develop. When I was training at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, I had aspirations to be a clinical tutor.
My first staff nurse post was in ICU, and then I remained in acute surgical nursing for the next seven years, working in London, Adelaide, Sydney and Oxford. A turning point in my career was the decision to study for five years, gaining a diploma and degree, at the time when degree-based nurse training was launched in Oxford.
