Why did you become a nurse?

I became a nurse because of a number of things - not least because I was considered more useful helping my pal with her frequent nose-bleeds, out of the classroom where she'd be dripping blood all over the place. It is covered in the first chapter of It Won't Hurt A Bit.

How did your career develop since you started nursing?

I was focused on becoming a district nurse, as it was called, because my mother used to listen and take the advice of a friend who was one. She always spoke kindly and passionately about her patients who'd obviously become almost like an extended family. She lived the job, was part of the community and greatly respected. A memorable lady. My career developed because I knew I had to become a registered general nurse, midwife and have district nurse training. It helps when you know what you want to do.
