Why did you become a nurse?
I wanted to be a nurse from the age of nine; my mum was a nursing sister in a cottage hospital in Northamptonshire and I so admired her work and could not think of anything else I would rather do, so I qualified as a nurse in Northampton in 1983.
How has your career developed since you started nursing?
I worked on ITU at Northampton and Orthopaedics in London at the Central Middlesex Hospital until 1985 when I moved to Cambridgeshire and started a family. I then moved into primary care as a practice nurse. This was at a time when nursing in primary care was in its infancy and not really recognised as a vital and essential role.
