Why did you become a nurse?
I drifted into nursing, having left school with no clear idea of what I wanted to do, but knowing I didn't want to go to university. I got a job as an HCA at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, and discovered the job that became the love of my life.
How has your career developed since you started nursing?
When I started as a practice nurse (PN) over 25 years ago, the role was in its infancy. It has evolved into a career which allows PNs to manage an independent case load, including prescribing. There is scope for developing specialist clinical skills while providing a generalist service, including health promotion. My master's degree was in primary care development and a continuing interest in health and social policy has paid dividends in supporting my position as the PN member of NHS Southwark CCG.
