Career profile: Sharon Haggerty

Sharon Haggerty, Regional Head of Professional Leadership at NHS England, and Queen’s Nurse.

What initially drew you to nursing?

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a nurse. There was a magazine called Twinkle – I remember being five and in there was an article all about ‘Nurse Nancy’. Her dolls and teddy bears were her patients, and her granddad built her beds for them. I used to absolutely look forward every week to that coming. And that was what I always wanted to be all the way through school. Seeing my mother in the uniform – we used to go and pick her up from work and that reinforced nursing as a career choice.
