Why did you become a nurse?

I was inspired, as a child, watching a nurse on a bicycle doing her visits to peoples homes in the 1960s.

I remember my mother giving birth at home to one of my siblings when I was eight years old and I asked the midwife what you needed to do to become one. She told me to work hard at school because you had to learn a lot, be kind to people and develop self confidence.

How has your career developed since you started nursing?

After qualifying, I rotated around specialties, then took up a theatre nursing post, where I stayed for a year. I started midwifery training and, after qualifying in 1986, worked in midwifery for a large part of my career. I became a sister in 1993.
