Enhancing leadership in practice

Chief nurses have a responsibility to experience health care at the frontline, writes Sue Nicholls

I am the chief nurse of a CCG, responsible for ensuring the quality assurance and improvement of the services we commission.

The CCG also has a statutory duty to ensure continuous improvements in primary care. These include improving access, support to reduce unwarranted variation in outcomes and reducing inequalities. It also provides infection prevention advice, medicines optimisation support, preparation for CQC inspections and the provision of protected learning time for all practice staff.

An important aspect of my role is to represent the voice of nursing on the CCG governing body. Through applying and challenging the nursing view for a number of commissioning decisions, I felt I had a responsibility to understand the current issues facing the nursing frontline.
