How to have a positive exit interview

What can I say and what should I not say in an exit interview?

Q: I am leaving my current practice soon and I have been told I must undertake an exit interview. While I have enjoyed my time here, there have been times when I have felt poorly treated. I am not sure what I might be asked at the interview or what I may say. It seems a bit of a waste of time. Do I have to attend? And what can I say and what should I not say?

A: Let me say first you do not have to attend an exit interview, but my advice is that you should. If you follow my advice, you may find it is helpful to both you and your current employer.
