NHS Trust HR director Graham White offers advice on employment issues affecting nurses

I am a GP-employed nurse with little access to training or education. Am I entitled to training? If not, how can I persuade my employers it would be beneficial to fund my training?

Nurses and midwives must maintain registration by meeting post-registration education and practice (Prep) standards set by the NMC. There is no obligation on employers to fund this but nurses who do not maintain continuous professional development (CPD) could find it threatens a lapse in their registration.

I checked with a number of GP- employed nurses and all confirmed their employers actively support and fund their training no matter how small the practice. So I would urge any GP-employed nurse to discuss this with their employer and explain the need and benefits gained from nurse CPD.
