I am a practice nurse and qualified as an independent supplementary prescriber three months ago. My manager has requested that I complete an extensive document outlining the areas in which I prescribe. I am asked to list the medicines along with evidence of competence including continuing professional development (CPD)I have undertaken. Do I need to complete this, it seems restrictive?
As a practice nurse, prescribing for a broad range of conditions, completing the document will take time. However, you must work within your employer's policies, so you will need to do it.
It is your responsibility as a prescriber to ensure you are up-to-date and competent since you are accountable for your own prescribing decisions. Your continuing professional development needs should be assessed annually as part of performance review and you should keep a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates CPD you have undertaken and ongoing needs through reflection. These learning needs should be supported by your employer and addressed to their/your satisfaction.
