Practical prescribing

Molly Courtenay helps resolve everyday issues for nurse prescribers

I work in a general practice and run a number of clinics for patients with diabetes. The doctors with whom I work have drawn up a protocol which identifies a list of medicines they are happy for me to supply/administer to these patients. Am I legally permitted to do this? I am not a nurse prescriber - although I have been considering, undertaking training to prescribe. Can you advise?

You are quite right to question these instructions as practice protocols alone will not cover a nurse to supply and/or administer medicines.

A patient specific direction (PSD) or a patient group direction (PGD) must be in place.
