Simplifying venous leg ulcer management

Recommendations to improve the management of venous leg ulcers has been produced by an expert working group from Wounds International.

Recommendations to improve the management of venous leg ulcers has been produced by an expert working group from Wounds International. The recommendations identify that venous leg ulcers have a negative impact on all aspects of everyday life, and aim to reduce this through best practice and effective management of the condition. The document uses an 'ABC' model of management for leg ulcers, centred around assessment and diagnosis, best practice wound and skin management, and compression therapy for active treatment and for prevention of reccurrence. For the first stage assessment and diagnosis the recommendations state that healthcare professionals should investigate whether conditions such as venous disease, diabetes, or arthritis has contributed to the ulcer. Additionally, patients should be evaluated for suitability of compression therapy. The second step, best practice wound management, covers, cleaning, preparing skin for treatment, and debridement. Finally, the section on compression therapy covers the implementation and management of the treatment, as well as potential side effects.
