General practice is contracted under three different types of contracts. All three contractual options allow the opportunity for nurses to become partners. Nurses are taking up partnerships in existing practices along with their GP and practice manager colleagues and also establishing new practices.

This article will look at a number of diffferent issues and factors that nurses should take into account if they are looking to become a nurse partner.

General practice has always been the gatekeeper to the NHS and with the recent development and introduction of CCGs, general practice and primary care has become even more important. Primary care practitioners are now responsible for the commissioning of acute services. With an ever-increasing demand on acute services it is primary care services keeping the system functioning.
