The role of the specialist TB nurse

Debbie Alder talks to Kathy Oxtoby about her work as a TB nurse and its many challenges
Patients with TB in the UK are often homeless, or in otherwise vulnerable or socially deprived circumstances

Cases of tuberculosis (TB) in England are on the rise.  In 2023, a total of 4,855 people were notified with TB in England - an increase of 11% compared with 2022 - according to data published by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).1

TB is a bacterial infection that most frequently affects the lungs, which is when it is infectious.2 England remains a low TB incidence country below the World Health Organization (WHO) threshold of less than or equal to 10 per 100,000. But numbers and rates in England are now above the levels seen before the COVID-19 pandemic, and the annual increase in 2023 is the largest in the current reporting period (1971-2023).1
